Last night some anarchists paid a visit to the home of the leader of Nottingham City Council, Jon Collins, to deliver some pre-election propaganda. 'CUT COLLINS THE PARASITE!' and 'FIGHT THE CUTS!' were painted at the entrance to his block of flats.

With security forces in Bahrain attacking protesters and dragging doctors from their beds, it has emerged that Nottingham-based arms company Heckler & Koch has supplied 13 000 rounds of small arms ammunition to Bahrain. The ammo was for H&K rifles and submachine guns, which have been used by Bahraini police against the democracy movement in the last few weeks.

Friday 22 April
Holiday on Friday and the Market Square was full of folks enjoying the sun.
A Capoeira session started up by the lions in front of the Council House and was hugely enjoyed by those there and those passing by. A few having a go for the first time. Warden patroling the area looked on with a bit of sour face :-)

A well attended public meeting 'Save Our NHS - Kill the Bill' at the Nottingham Mechanics last night highlighted the threat of the government's Health and Social Care Bill 2011. Around 100 people packed the main hall of the event organised by Notts Save Our Services and others.

From 18th-20th April, the University of Nottingham hosted a meeting of the Association of University Administrators. Minister for Universities David Willetts was to attend, but had dropped out in advance. In response, Nottingham Students Against Fees and Cuts organised a protest.

The Minorca Opencast Protest Group, in it's latest press release, again makes clear the need for a Banker's Guarantee to cover the proposed community benefits in case Leicestershire County Council grant planning permission for an opencast mine on the Minorca site in Leicestershire. This is because the company concerned has slipped even further into debt.

Recent weeks have seen a surge of local activity in defence of the NHS. Campaigners are opposed to cutbacks hitting the health service, as elsewhere, but also about proposed “reforms” of the NHS which critics claim will lead to widespread privatisation and a much reduced service.
