NTU: "Section 6" - Squatting Photography
Tagged as: alternatives culture environmentalism local_communities photography squattingNottingham Trent University photography students degree shows have again been exhibited.
Over the last week, I've been to visit some of their many shows around Nottingham. I especially wanted to show you the work of Tom Willett who displayed a set of pictures of the JB Spray squat titled "Section 6"
He says: "Squatting has been a part of our society for hundreds of years, yet we see little in-depth coverage of this alternate style of living. With this project I wanted to investigate the kinds of people who choose to live this way and why. I focused on one particular squat in Nottingham, a disused lace factory, and have visited it frequently over the past six months. The squatters that I met were very interesting and diverse, some squatting for decades as a way of life, whereas others are merely there for the time being. It is fascinating to see how they have transformed a factory into a comfortable living space; one which is constantly changing as people come and go. By photographing them and the environment that they live in I hope to challenge preconceptions and provide an insight into this largely unseen world."
