UNESCO has designated August 23rd International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. The date was chosen to commemorate a slave uprising on Saint Domingue (now Haiti) which began during the night of August 22nd to August 23rd, 1791, an event which contributed to the eventual demise of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

On Sunday July 18th, the Anarchist Federation's Nottingham group hosted an event at the Sparrow's Nest entitled "Civil War and Revolution: Anarchism in Spain". The event came the day after the re-dedication of the memorial to the International Brigades at County Hall, West Bridgford.
