Spencerism: Industrial and Ideological conflict in the Nottinghamshire Coalfield
A talk by Laurence Turner
George Spencer was one of the most controversial trade union leaders of the 20th century. His actions made him a hero to some and a pariah to others. Even today 'Spencerism' is used as a term of either abuse or praise. Using new evidence, this talk will re-examine Spencer's life and legacy and argue for fresh interpretations of this divisive figure and the union he founded.
Laurence Turner studied history at Oxford University and is currently studying for a Masters in Industrial Relations in inter-war Britain.
