UNESCO has designated August 23rd International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. The date was chosen to commemorate a slave uprising on Saint Domingue (now Haiti) which began during the night of August 22nd to August 23rd, 1791, an event which contributed to the eventual demise of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
This is a good opportunity to look back at Notttingham's little-known involvement in the slave trade, an issue previously explored on Indymedia in 2007, during the events to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the trade.
