Gathering and Ramble

OUT OF THE WOODS?

Campaign group rambles against woodland cutbacks - see www.savesherwoodforest.org.uk

Save Sherwood Forest, together with forest campaign groups across the
country and strongly supported by the general public, won an amazing victory
by forcing the government to abandon its proposal to sell 258,000 hectares of
state-owned woodland managed by the Forestry Commission.
Although we’ve won this particular battle we are not out of the woods yet.
Cuts of 25% to Forestry Commission England announced in the 2010
spending review will severely compromise the commission’s ability to retain a
decent forestry estate, with protected access and services, and to protect
biodiversity, wildlife and the environment; all of which combats climate
change.
Nottinghamshire County Council still face large budget cuts, which will also
have profound consequences to those employed to care for the Sherwood
Forest area.
In response to these cuts, Save Sherwood Forest have joined the newlyformed
Forests Campaigns Network, which is organising a national day of
local actions on World Forest Day, Sunday March 20th, to ensure that we
protect and invest in our forests.
Save Sherwood Forest are organising a short ramble at 2.15pm on Sunday
20th March, meeting at the notice board at Sherwood Pines, which is located
between the car park and the visitors’ centre. Our guide will be Paddy
Tipping, national vice-president of the Ramblers association, who will show us
the Forestry Commission’s good practice on nature conservation, education
and public access. We invite you to join our campaign to protect our forests.
We look forward to seeing you at the car park Sherwood Pines on 20th March
– a great opportunity for some fresh air, good company and to show the
government that we do not intend to let them get away with any further
attempts to privatise our forests.
