National Shop Stewards Network: Police interfere with sparks protest at Ratcliffe

Around 40 sparks were protesting outside Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station on Wednesday 1st February to fight the imposition of the BESNA contract.

They have been out each week for the past couple of months, and usually when they hold a protest are able to stop cars going into the site and cause a lot of disruption on the roads tailing back to the M1. However, due to this success and the fact that …

Energy Live News: Another sparks protest at Ratcliffe

Protestors at Ratcliffe on Soar power station disrupted traffic on the A453 motorway near Nottingham early this morning. The power station is located on the A-road which is just off junction 24 on the M1.

The protest was part of an on-going dispute over pay cuts between a trade union and a subcontractor at the E.ON-owned coal plant and is at least the second protest this year, according to un…

Notts workers strike for pensions

23-thumb

An estimated 60,000 public sector workers across Nottinghamshire went on strike on 30th November. The aim of the strike was to put pressure on the government over its plans to radically change public sector pensions. Unions claim that the proposed changes would mean that workers pay more, work longer and receive less at the end of it. Undoubtedly the strikes were also a protest against the wi…

N30 critical mass and free space

As well as the main pickets and march yesterday, a critical mass was organised to shut down the city. A group of 25 cyclists cycled (at extremely slow pace) around the city centre for a few hours after the march had finished, spreading the word about the strike and the fight against government cuts everywhere we went. There was a huge amount of public support for our message.

N30: County Hall pickets report

County Hall is the HQ of Tory-run Nottinghamshire County Council, led by the appropriately named Kay Cutts. As public sector unions took action in defence of their pensions on November 30th, it was just one of the hundreds of picketed building across the country.

N30 march in Nottingham

The November 30th march in Nottingham in defence of public sector pensions was huge. It was by far and away the biggest demonstration I've ever been on in the city and it's even been suggested that it could have been the largest trade union demonstrations in Nottingham's history.

N30: What's happening?

Scissors_v_rock-thumb

Tomorrow (Wednesday November 30th) will see the largest industrial action in the UK for many years, perhaps the biggest since the General Strike of 1926. Inevitably there will be the usual war of words as to the effectiveness of the action, but it is already clear that this will be a significant and disruptive strike locally and nationally.

New Timetable for Nottingham Freespace

Despite being evicted from the Old Tory Club, we're going to carry on with some of our workshop plans.  Here's the revised timetable

Nottingham Freespace is still happening

This is a statement by those who opened up the Nottingham Freespace at the old Tory party social club in Lenton this week. We opened up the space in order to provide a radical social centre in Lenton that could connect to and support the strike on November 30th. We entered the building last Tuesday night and have spent the last 6 days cleaning, clearing and making a what was an unusable building r…

A group have occupied the empty Conservative Club on Church Street in Lenton. The Bigger Society Social Club will feature workshops, discussions and film showings in support of movements for radical social change. In particular, the participants are focussing on supporting the public sector strike on 30th November as well as the wider anti-cuts movement.

What is a Scab?

In the run up to the mass actions and strikes on November 30 the government has begin its predicatble divisive counter attacks. It is encouaging people to be traitors to their class and to do the work of colleagues who are on strike. Lets just remind ourselves what a scab is.

All out on N30! A striker's guide

With a week to go, a lot of planning is going on to make N30 in Nottingham a big day. This is an attempt to put it all into some kind of meaningful timetable.

Strike to defend pensions on 30th November

Our public sector workers strike on 30th November is growing, and some say will involve more workers than any action since the 1926 General Strike. Schools and health services, as well as central and local government, will see workers defying their bosses in defence of pension rights, and the wider attack on public services.
