Bristling Badger: Undercover Oversight

As the undercover policing scandal rolls on - with the tenacious Guardian journalists about to publish their book and have the accompanying documentary screened by Channel 4 on Monday - the government has announced tighter rules for future operations.

All long-term undercover policing operations will be independently authorised

Well that sounds reassuring. But which outside body will be …

Nottinghamshire Police Helicopter was on operations this afternoon.  Working at quite low levels over the Mapperley area of Nottingham, it was there for quite a long period. [don't know if they got their man].

Documents obtained by the Guardian reveal that earlier this month five forces – Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire – formed the East Midlands Technical Surveillance Unit (Emtsu) after a series of internal consultations that took place behind closed doors in March.

Detective Chief Superintendent Ian Waterfield of Nottinghamshire police wrote in …

Increasing social control in Nottingham

110701_d300s_065-thumb

There is a growing tendency for Nottingham City Council, the police and other authorities to seek ownership of and the right to regulate and control public space in the city. The redevelopment of the Market Square has meant that the former centre of public life in the city has been taken into the ‘ownership’ of the City Council for fee-paying markets and attractions. Ever increasing concen…

: Hucknall school fingerprinting pupils

The Post reports on the installation of fingerprinting technology at Holgate School in Hucknall. While the Post appear to be unquestioningly channeling the county council press release, the negative implications of routinely surveilling children in this manner should be obvious.

The Post reports, "The fingerprint technology will also be rolled out at Carlton le Willows School, in Gedling, and Ch…

Interview with Hicham Yezza & Rizwaan Sabir

Hicham Yezza and Rizwaan Sabir were arrested under the Terrorism Act in May 2008 at the University of Nottingham. In the pair's first joint interview since those events, Riseup Radio spoke to them about the persecution they've faced since the arrests, the plight of other Muslims accused of terrorist offences, the government's anti-terror strategies, the growth of Islamophobia in the media and in t…

CCTV in Forest Fields: Lessons from Brum

One of the things that most disturbs friends from other countries when they first arrive in Britain is the omnipresence of CCTV. Whilst in Europe people are used to seeing cameras at major stations and airports and on government buildings and banks, they are nothing like as prevalent as the cameras we have. And they are certainly never stationed in residential neighbourhoods (or the toilets of jun…
