Nottinghamshire Police Helicopter Unit Operations

Wednesday 7 December 2011

Nottinghamshire Police Helicopter was on operations this afternoon. Working at quite low levels over the Mapperley area of Nottingham, it was there for quite a long period. [don't know if they got their man].

Increasing social control in Nottingham

There is a growing tendency for Nottingham City Council, the police and other authorities to seek ownership of and the right to regulate and control public space in the city. The redevelopment of the Market Square has meant that the former centre of public life in the city has been taken into the ‘ownership’ of the City Council for fee-paying markets and attractions. Ever increasing concentrations of CCTV cameras monitor everything and everyone, and now there is a proposal to monitor everyone’s car as well. Meanwhile, so-called Community Protection Officers patrol the streets, looking for people to harass for standing on the wrong steps, taking photos or providing entertainment. Whose city is it? Ours or the Council’s? Isn’t it time we refused to be controlled?

Workplace Parking Levy to use ANPR

Andy at NCCLOLs has found out that the Workplace Parking Levy (WPL) will be enforced using a vehicle equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). This will drive into the car parks of all workplaces in Nottingham City Centre recording the registrations of all the vehicles parked there, 8 times in every 28 days. This data will then be analysed to work out which vehicles are normally parked in those locations. Not content with surveilling us in every public space the Council now want to start following our cars as well!

More CCTV in Hyson Green

Council plans to develop the road junction between Alfreton Road, Bobbers Mill Road and Churchfield Road include the installation of CCTV. The council's explanation of and justification for the scheme have been described by a Notttingham Indymedia reader as "confusing."

Interview with Hicham Yezza & Rizwaan Sabir

Hicham Yezza and Rizwaan Sabir were arrested under the Terrorism Act in May 2008 at the University of Nottingham. In the pair's first joint interview since those events, Riseup Radio spoke to them about the persecution they've faced since the arrests, the plight of other Muslims accused of terrorist offences, the government's anti-terror strategies, the growth of Islamophobia in the media and in the form of groups like the EDL, and what their plans are for the future.

CCTV in Forest Fields: Lessons from Brum

One of the things that most disturbs friends from other countries when they first arrive in Britain is the omnipresence of CCTV. Whilst in Europe people are used to seeing cameras at major stations and airports and on government buildings and banks, they are nothing like as prevalent as the cameras we have. And they are certainly never stationed in residential neighbourhoods (or the toilets of junior schools![1]). The outrage caused by such a development would see them removed immediately, by legal means or sabotage by angry locals. Many visitors are shocked at how widespread the use of this invasive and authoritarian technology is in the UK.
