Squatting law to commence 1st September

We have just received verification that the new law, criminalising squatting in residential properties will come into effect on September 1st 2012.

A bunch of people concerned at the possible criminalisation of squatting, are looking into how we can open more 'community spaces'.  Meeting in Nottingham, we have a mind to keep a list of suitable empty properties that need to be put to better use, than being empty!

UPDATE: The space has been evicted but will continue at the Sumac Centre.

An occupied autonomous space has been opened in Nottingham. The free space, at the former Conservative Social Club on Church Street in Lenton, is intended as a space to plan and discuss ways of supporting the strike on November 30th, as well as the wider anti-cuts campaign and other movements for radical social change.

Today Ken Clarkes home was targeted by squatters in protest against government plans to criminalise squatting. Squatters and supporters of squatting from across London stood on the porch of Clarkes terraced house unfurling a banner which read "housing is a human right" and served a mock six month eviction notice on him.

Still uncertain when the eviction of the Spray squat will be attempted.



But, in the meantime the supporters of the squat, party in the street. Offering moral support and wishing all well. The gig would have continued for the rest of the day, if not for the bad weather.

Earlier today in Nottingham County Court, a judge granted a possession order.

A judge granted a posession order for the JB Spray factory in Radford on Monday morning. The order gives the legal right for David Andrew Phillips, the legal owner, to evict squatters from the building which has been occupied since last Spring. This morning the JB SPRAY squat in Radford, Nottingham was served notice of a court date on Thursday 3/6/10. The landlord intends to obtain a possession order to force us from the building. We intend to resist, but we need your help.
