Police investigated over alleged sex attacks on public

FIFTEEN officers and staff from Notts Police are being investigated for sexual crimes against the public, new figures reveal.

The force said they had been suspended or placed on restricted duties.

Figures obtained from 38 of the 43 forces in England and Wales reveal that 169 officers, police community support officers (PCSOs) and support staff were under criminal and disciplinary investigations for sex-related offences.

They suggest Notts has the third highest number of such investigations ongoing, behind the Greater Manchester and Metropolitan forces.

Deputy chief constable Sue Fish said the investigations had been sparked by the conviction of former inspector Russell Dew.

He was sentenced to six years in jail for sexual offences against a 13-year-old girl in 2011.

Senior officers from forces across England and Wales have reportedly held a top-level private meeting to tackle the issue of officers who abuse their position to make inappropriate sexual advances or carry out sexual attacks on members of the public, many of whom are victims of crime.
