Protests have begun against Nottingham City Council’s plans for extensive felling of trees in Lenton. On Friday a small demonstration against the logging was held which attracted the attention of City Council staff and PCSOs. The council is planning to cut down 84 lime trees because of “aphid mess, falling branches and loss of light”, but the protestors say it is really a money saving strateg…
On Friday a small demo to protect the beautiful lime trees of Lenton was organised at the last minute and we would hope have a larger one on Monday.
UPDATE: The space has been evicted but will continue at the Sumac Centre.
An occupied autonomous space has been opened in Nottingham. The free space, at the former Conservative Social Club on Church Street in Lenton, is intended as a space to plan and discuss ways of supporting the strike on November 30th, as well as the wider anti-cuts campaign and other movements for radical social change.
The Notts Free Space is now open to the public. We are occupying the former Conservative Social Club on Church Street in Lenton. Please come and support us tonight and tomorrow whilst we get off the ground. A programme of events will be taking place throughout the week.
With security forces in Bahrain attacking protesters and dragging doctors from their beds, it has emerged that Nottingham-based arms company Heckler & Koch has supplied 13 000 rounds of small arms ammunition to Bahrain. The ammo was for H&K rifles and submachine guns, which have been used by Bahraini police against the democracy movement in the last few weeks.
The repression of pro-democracy protests in countries such as Libya and Bahrain has refocused attention on the arms trade. The issue was even covered by the BBC’s One Show which did a report on arms dealers in Nottingham. This included a section on Lenton-based Heckler & Koch.

This letter will be hard for many men to read. However, as it arose due to specific experiences in the activist scene in Nottingham we post it here in the hope that it will provoke critical reflection among those who need it.

Across the Middle East and North Africa, people have risen up to try to overthrow their undemocratic governments, and these uprisings have been met with state-sponsored violence and repression. Now Notts Anti-Militarism can reveal that several of these repressive regimes have been armed by a company with an international sales office in Nottingham: Heckler & Koch.
The Notts SOS Combating the Cuts: Planning for Action event will take place in Nottingham as planned, on Saturday, 15th. January 2011 in the Dunkirk and Old Lenton Community Centre.

H&K illegal sales to Mexico exposed
The German HQ of arms company Heckler & Koch has been raided by police after campaigners exposed illegal weapons sales to conflict zones in Mexico.
4pm on Monday July 13th, people had gathered at the gates to the UK headquarters of Heckler & Koch, based within the Easter Park Industrial Estate on Lenton Lane, Nottingham. Nottingham NG7 PX. [Unit 3 in fact].
