Human rights are not for sale: Debating women's rights and sex work
“Our society treats street-based sex workers as if they were disposable.” (‘Voices for Dignity’)
Screening of short films followed by a panel discussion with Daniela Scotece (Chief Executive Officer, POW Nottingham), Professor Julia O’Connell-Davidson (Professor of Sociology, University of Nottingham) and Lucy Binch (PhD candidate, University of Sheffield).
The event will explore how stigma, discrimination and violence in the sex trade affect the enjoyment of human rights.
Sex workers are stripped of the rights and freedoms that other citizens enjoy. They face harassment and abuse at the hands of clients and police officers. Stigma, which is associated with selling sex, prevents them from equal access to health and social services.
What has to be done in order to prevent these violations? Why do people get involved in the sex trade? These and other issues will be discussed by the guest panellists.
Brought to you by POW Nottingham and HRLC Human Rights Film Series.
