Cracks are appearing in the government’s plans to silence criticism from ordinary people, charities and campaigning organisations, known as the ‘gagging law’.

Originally intended to limit the power of large cash rich lobby groups.  It misses its target and restricts small organisations expressing any opinion deemed to be politically motived, effective in the twelve months before a general election.

On Friday 10th January 38 Degrees members in Nottingham East are meeting Chris Leslie MP to hand in a copy of the 38 Degrees 210,000-strong petition against the gagging law. Alongside this, we'll also be giving Chris a copy of a report which an independent commission has recently published which details problems with the gagging law and what the government could do to fix it. It’s caused quite a stir in the House of Lords - but many MPs won’t have read it yet.

Chris Leslie voted aye for Amendment 101 and 102 which means he voted in favour of scraping the bad parts of the Bill. However he was absent for the 3rd reading.
