We would like to invite you to join us for the screening of Pretty Dyana, a 45 minute documentary about Roma people in Serbia. The film is an intimate look at Gypsy refugees in Belgrade suburb who make a living by transforming Citroen's classic 2cv and Dyana cars into Mad Max-like recycling vehicles, with which they collect cardboard, bottles and scrap metal. These modern horses are much more efficient than the cart-pushing competition, but more important - they also mean freedom, hope and style for their crafty owners. Even the car batteries are used as power generators in order to get some light, watch tv and recharge mobiles! Almost an alchemist's dream come true! But the police doesn't always find these strange vehicles funny...
We also have a film about Irish Traveller history and culture in the Britain and Ireland called Pavee Ceileidh - This piece about Irish Travellers was put together with the help of the 'Irish Traveller Movement in Britain' staff, and explores Traveller stereotypes.
Come join us at the Sumac Centre, 245 Gladstone Street, Forest Fields on Sunday 1st April at 8pm.
On Sunday 8th April is Roma Nation Day. To mark Roma Nation Day in the UK people are mobilising to assemble in Hyde Park Corner, London at 12 noon. From there protests will be held outside embassies of countries where Roma are persecuted, and government departments responsible for racist Traveller evictions throughout the UK.
This evening will be a chance to get together with other people who share the same concerns about the situation of Roma, Gypsy and Travelling people.
Support the resistance of Roma, Gypsies and Travellers!
