Foundation of a new national political party of the left

PRESS RELEASE – IMMEDIATE

NEW NATIONAL POLITICAL PARTY TO CHALLENGE THE BIG THREE

On November 30th, a new national political party will be founded, to challenge the increasingly similar policies of the three main parties.

Left Unity has its roots in an appeal by Ken Loach (Director of the film Spirit of ’45) and others to establish a party that would defend the Welfare State and ordinary people against the Government’s austerity programme. The project rapidly attracted over 10,000 supporters and nearly 100 local groups were set up to bring people into the centre of the process.

Nottingham/Notts Left Unity spokesperson Mike Scott said:

“This is the first serious attempt to set up a new mass party of the left since the founding of the Labour Party over a hundred years ago. All three main parties are now offering pretty much the same policies, taking cash from the pockets of those who are already struggling and subsidising the bankers and hedge funds who caused the problem in the first place: how can that be right?

Our aim is for everyone to contribute fairly to the community through taxation and to receive what they need when they are unable to support themselves and their families – it’s really not rocket science! Big companies and the rich have the most money, so it’s only fair that they contribute the most.

Left Unity will be bottom up, not top down. We will support what local people want: an end to public sector cuts, fair tax and welfare policies, more affordable housing and living-wage jobs.”

This party will be unique: broad left, democratic, non-sectarian, against all forms of discrimination, ready to listen to people who are turned-off by the whole political process. There are millions of people who currently have no-one to vote for – to them we say: “this is the party for you!”
