Market Square, Nottingham
"World Event Young Artists 2012" have been holding events across Nottingham over the last week.
Here is a sample of a couple of events in the Market Square on Saturday.
The Silk Route: A textile 'happening' celebrating the local and global scale of the festival.
"Over the summer, City Arts has been working with local people to make a garden of silk sculptures to decorate Nottingham’s Market Square. These vibrant silk creations have been made by families and community groups working with artist Panya Banjoko and textile designer Ali Pretty, from Kinetika, to celebrate World Event Young Artists this September, when Nottingham will be hosting 1,000 artists from across the world. To welcome these Artists to our city, Ali will also be inviting each of them to contribute to our Silk Route – a huge 45 meter length of silk. Using the batik technique, artists will be asked to add their name and map their place of birth alongside writing and imagery created by Nottingham people as a celebration of the local and global scale of the festival."
"Ali Pretty will be painting the Silk Route live in Market Square. The length of silk will be rolled out across the slabs and as Ali applies dyes to the fabric, the names, poetry and images created by local people and the visiting artists will be revealed."
Resonation: Chimes and Percussive Collaboration in a geodesic dome.
"City Arts’ giant Chimes are a unique sonic experience. They consist of a mixture of 18 giant scale tubes (up to 3.5 metres) set up in six pyramids, and a number of smaller sets of tubes in a more traditional xylophone format. They are all tuned to the pentatonic scale, making them immediately accessible. They can be played by skilled musicians and beginners alike. The public will be able to experience and interact with the instruments and Sabar Soundsystem will also be performing a new musical composition with the Chimes in the Market Square."
"Resonation brings together young people and professional musicians to create a Rhythm and Chimes youth orchestra. The aim of the project is to enhance young people’s confidence, skills and development through music. This project is supported by the Mansfield Disability Support Team, Youth Music and Nottinghamshire County Council. The young people have been working with different musicians to learn new skills and work towards a performance during World Event Young Artists"
They say:
"World Event Young Artists is the very first event of its kind to take place. It is an exciting occasion bringing together and celebrating the talent and artistic excellence of young people from across the globe. In September 2012 World Event for Young Artists [WEYA] will bring a staggering 1,000 young artists (18 – 30 years) from 120 nations to Nottingham. Over a period of 10 days, these artists will bring the city to life with creative activity across all art forms including visual arts, music and gastronomy. These artists will have the chance to showcase their practice, exchange ideas and build future collaborations".
