Starbucks: wake up and smell the coffee

1.00pm Saturday 8th December 2012

Meeting up at Starbucks on South Parade, Just south of the Market Square, Nottingham

People gathered, handed out leaflets and the Notts uncut banner displayed. The issue being further aired by the media these last few weeks, was about the lack of tax being collected by the large corporations ..... set against the cuts in services applied to so many of the poorest in society.

Criminalisation of protest in Nottingham

On Saturday December 17th, Notts Uncut participated in the UK Uncut “Christmas Special,” visiting the usual tax dodging companies. Notts Police took an unusually confrontational attitude asking for people’s details, imposing conditions on the protest. Once person was arrested after she asked for clarification of the instructions, while another was arrested after remonstrating with the police about the initial arrest. A third arrest took place that evening for allegedly refusing to leave Bridewell Police Station where supporters were waiting for the arrestees.

Reclaim Nottingham! party hits town

On Saturday a roving street party against the enclosure of public space for private profit was held in the city centre. A mobile sound system toured around town paying visits to banks and other corporate targets. Participants gave out hundreds of flyers protesting social control of the city centre and the human and environmental destruction of the banks. Meanwhile Notts Uncut held a protest outside Vodaphone on Clumber Street after an incident in which a ten year old boy was alleged to have been assaulted by staff. The shop was forced to close early.

Notts Rejects Plans For NHS

Last week saw a flurry of activity in opposition to the planned “reforms” of the NHS in Nottinghamshire. There were protests at the two “listening” events held in the county and a well received stall in the Market Square on Saturday. In Worksop, campaigners dressed as Robin Hood distributed leaflets in the town centre inviting people to the listening exercise there on Friday. Another Notts Uncut action, this time focusing on the NHS, is planned for next weekend.

Upcoming event: Notts Uncut Emergency Operation, Saturday May 28th, 12 noon, outside Boots, Parliament St, Nottingham.

Notts Uncut: Still Protesting

On the day of the royal wedding, Notts Uncut had its Facebook profile deleted along with around 50 political groups. Despite this apparently politically motivated move, the group has continued its protests against tax dodging companies, returning to Nottingham city centre on 30th April and going further afield to Lincoln on Saturday 7th May to link up with a newly formed group there.

Nottingham Mobilises to Save NHS

Recent weeks have seen a surge of local activity in defence of the NHS. Campaigners are opposed to cutbacks hitting the health service, as elsewhere, but also about proposed “reforms” of the NHS which critics claim will lead to widespread privatisation and a much reduced service.

Upcoming event: Save our NHS: Kill the Bill, April 21st, 7pm, The Mechanics, North Sherwood St.

Never Trust a Copper

The Guardian has published a video from Saturday's Fortnum and Masons occupation by UK Uncut. Taken by legal observers from Green and Black Cross, the footage shows a police chief inspector telling protesters that they will soon be allowed to leave. Of course, they were all subsequently arrrested.

No doubt most of us can think of instances when Her Majesty's Finest have lied through their teeth at a demonstration, but they're rarely stupied enough to get recorded doing so. When they are, it can have a seriously detrimental effect on an cases which follow arrests.
