2013 has been another relatively quiet year on the newswire, but it has not passed without event. Protests and strikes against austerity have continued and the death of Maggie Thatcher was marked.

Unfortunately, the year has not seen the resolution of the concerns about the project's sustainability - despite a large and enthusiastic meeting in February - and these will have to be revisited in the new year.

The beginning of 2013 offers an opportunity to look back over our achievements (or lack of) in 2012. While the mainstream media obsessed over the Queen's Diamond Jubilee "celebrations" and the Olympics and Paralympics, Nottingham Indymedia has continued to report on the ongoing campaigns of groups as varied as tax campaigners (Notts Uncut), animal rights activists (opposing the badger cull) and environmentalists (occupying the gas power station at High Marnham).

Unfortunately this year has been notably quieter on the newswire than those which preceded it, a reflection of the current downturn in struggle across the country (although seemingly not elsewhere in Europe). This, coupled with the technical issues which have afflicted the site over the last few months, have posed questions about what - if anything - the future of the project is. This is something Nottingham Indymedia will be exploring - hopefully with input from others in and around the city - early in the new year. Watch this space to see how you can get involved.

The past year has been a particularly tumultuous one which has seen the wave of Middle Eastern revolutions, the Libyan war, the August Riots, the indignados and occupy movements, the Eurozone crisis, Hackgate, the continuing militancy of the anti-cuts movement and much more. Nottingham has felt the reverberations of many of these global events, with an Occupy Nottingham camp in the Market Square, anti-police riots, the biggest trade union march for decades and many solidarity and anti-cuts actions and demonstrations.

Occupy Nottingham: Xmas and New Year in Market Sq

Now almost two and a half months in, the Occupy Nottingham protest camp in Market Square continued through Christmas. The campers have now invited supporters to join them in Market Square on New Year's Eve, to "stand together to begin 2012 as one voice for change & an end to greed!" Meanwhile, occupiers in Leicester have decided to move indoors in order to help "sustain us over the cold winter."

Nottingham Indymedia: Review of 2010

The beginning of 2011 offers an opportunty to look back over 2010 and review how much the local activist movement has achieved. Last year has not always been easy, but in compiling a review of what has gone on, it is surprising just how much has gone on. Hopefully, this should provide a strong base for moving forward into 2011.
