According to a statement by people associated with the Athens Indymedia website, under pressure from the state attorney the internet connection to their server has been shutdown. Two anti-authoritarian radio stations have also been attacked by the Greek state.

An attack on one is an attack on all and we in Nottingham wish to give any support we can to those in Greece struggling against tyrannical control by the authorities who are suppressing their free expression. Come along to the benefit gig for Greek prisoners and squats tonight to find out more and to support the cause.

Nottingham Indymedia is relaunching

After a well attended meeting at the Sumac Centre on Monday, a revived Nottingham Indymedia collective have decided to relaunch the site. Publishing is now enabled again so please write articles, promote your events and continue to contribute to our community.

It will only stay open with your support so make sure you publish your news here, join the mailing list and support the collective however you feel able to. Our next meeting will take place on Mon 18th March, 7.30pm at the Sumac Centre and we welcome you to come along.

The Future of Nottingham Indymedia

We will hold a public meeting on Monday 18th February, 7.30pm at the Sumac Centre, Nottingham, to discuss the future of Indymedia in the region. We welcome anyone with any interest in the current Nottingham Indymedia site or independent media in general to come with ideas and energy. What happens next will be very dependent on what happens in that meeting.

Indymedia to close unless you get involved

Following a lot of discussion in our meetings, the Nottingham Indymedia collective has decided to disable publishing on the site from 31st January. The dwindling input into this site from local activists and groups has left us wondering whether the effort that goes into maintaining the site is still needed and wanted.

We will hold a public meeting on 18th February, 7.30pm at the Sumac Centre, Nottingham, to discuss the future of Indymedia in the region. We welcome anyone with any interest in the current Nottingham Indymedia site or independent media in general to come with ideas and energy. What happens next will be very dependent on what happens in that meeting.

Some members of the current collective have been doing what we do for the whole of the 7.5 years that this site has been in existence. We’ve had fun and achieved a lot. Now it’s up to you.

Nottingham Indymedia skill shares

Next Saturday (17th March), Nottingham Indymedia will be hosting two skill share sessions looking at Online Security (2pm) and giving an Introduction to Indymedia (4pm). The sessions will take place at the Sumac Centre in Forest Fields.

This is an attempt to explain what is going on behind the scenes as briefly as possible. Of course, it is our own version of events and others may dispute it.

Big changes are coming to Indymedia UK

On 1st May 2011 Indymedia UK will give birth to two new projects. The Indymedia UK website will be archived, it will stay were it is now, but you won’t be able to publish news. In its place there will be two distinct projects: Mayday will provide a non-regional site with open publishing and Be The Media will present the best of radical news across the regions, including Bristol, Northern, Nottingham and London.

Nottingham Indymedia has always strived to provide anonymous publishing. In the corporate dominated world of the internet, collecting information on site users is the norm. We think that Indymedia should allow users to decide how much information they reveal about themselves rather than storing data on site users. Due to the controversy generated by the publication of details about monitoring IP addresses and posts from Gateway 303, we think it is necessary to produce this statement of our view of events.

Nottingham Indymedia: Review of 2010

The beginning of 2011 offers an opportunty to look back over 2010 and review how much the local activist movement has achieved. Last year has not always been easy, but in compiling a review of what has gone on, it is surprising just how much has gone on. Hopefully, this should provide a strong base for moving forward into 2011.
