The wonderful Veggies volunteer crew are still all hands to the pump as they continue their packed 2014 tour, catering at events around the country promoting social change, community spirit, care for animals and the planet. Veggies is an all-vegan, volunteer-led, social enterprise based in the Sumac Centre in Forest Fields, Nottingham. This month they have been catering at some very diverse events indeed! Starting the month was Awaken Inn, a spiritually-minded event, followed by the British Juggling Convention, the Liverpool 'Live a Better Life' fair, Nottingham food event 'Melting Pot', and then rounded off with this year's 'World Day for Animals in Laboratories' march and rally, organised by the local grassroots group Nottingham Animal Rights.

It's full steam ahead for Nottingham's all-vegan and volunteer-led catering campaign Veggies as their 2014 tour is in full swing, with more events being added all the time. Most recently they have taken part in Leicester's annual environmental event, the Greenlight Festival, and also travelled down to Milton Keynes to bring vegan food to activists taking part in an anti-vivisection demo.

Last night there was a public meeting at the Maze to discuss the prospect of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, coming to Nottinghamshire. There was a very informative presentation given by a member of Friends of the Earth Nottingham and then there was a passionate debate about what could be done to stop fracking here in Notts. For 6 years, from 2005 – 2009, Veggies and other vegan campaigners helped organise the East Midlands' Vegan Festival which welcomed over 2000 members of the public each year to the Council House on Nottingham’s Old Market Square.

The ethical standards and environmental / human / animal rights ethos of the event are long established, having evolved from the pre-history of the Nottm Peace Festival from which it has grown.

Open cast mine in Trowell declared "invalid"

PLANS for an open cast mine in Trowell have been put back after the planning application was declared "invalid".

UK Coal applied for permission to extract 1.275 million tonnes of coal and 250,000 tonnes of fireclay by opencasting at Shortwood Farm.
