Notts says stop the bedroom tax

On Saturday, 2-300 people gathered at Speakers Corner in Nottingham to demonstrate against the coalition government’s bedroom tax. The government policy will see social tenants with a spare room having £40-£80 per month taken off their housing benefit. According to the protesters, “in Nottingham alone 4746 families will be affected by the Bedroom Tax” which “penalises the disabled, single parents, families of those recently deceased, foster parents and the parents of children in the army or at university”.

Nottingham protest rattles Atos

On Friday, a large protest temporarily invaded the Atos Medical Assessment Centre on Stoney Street in the Lace Market. Campaigners had gathered as part of a nationwide day of action against the company which is responsible for the Department for Work & Pensions’ ‘work capability assessments’ which have been condemned by disability rights and claimants groups. The protesters handed out leaflets and spoke to members of the public about Atos before Atos employees called the police in claiming that they were being harassed by the protest. Two protesters refused to leave and were arrested for aggravated trespass. A solidarity demonstration was held until both were released.

No welfare cuts! And no Tory Baronesses either!

After it was leaked to anti-cuts campaigners that Tory Baroness Stowell of Beeston would be visiting Parliament Street JobCentre today, a picket was held from 2-4pm. Claimants, anarchists, PCS members and UK Uncut activists made sure that Baroness Stowell, a representative of a welfare slashing government, was not welcome in town. Despite a police presence, including a Chief Inspector, the Baroness decided to call off her visit.
