Veggies On The Road (March Edition)

It's full steam ahead for Nottingham's all-vegan and volunteer-led catering campaign Veggies as their 2014 tour is in full swing, with more events being added all the time. Most recently they have taken part in Leicester's annual environmental event, the Greenlight Festival, and also travelled down to Milton Keynes to bring vegan food to activists taking part in an anti-vivisection demo.

Veggies Backs the Badgers!

Nottingham's ethical, all-vegan catering campaign Veggies has been on the road twice to Birmingham in the past few days, to show support for our scapegoated badger friends who are under attack from the Tory government. The government are trying to implement an appallingly misguided and underhand policy to cull one hundred thousand badgers in an effort to eradicate Bovine TB. As well as killing an innocent, and much loved member of British wildlife, the policy also flies in the face of the best scientific advice and public opinion, both of which are overwhelmingly in opposition to a cull.

A national day of anti-ATOS demonstrations was called for Wednesday 19th. February. ATOS were contracted, by the last Labourshite government and fully supported by this ConDem one, to bully and harass the long-term sick and disabled off their meagre benefit support and onto, the even more meagre, Job Seekers Allowance (JSA). Once on JSA they are expected to make themselves available for work or face sanctions, a situation countless hundreds of thousands of others face every week due, in no small part, to the somewhat over-eager complicity of JobCentre staff. Well now, wouldn't want to miss out on a reward voucher or two now would they.

Nottingham joined in the 'action', organised locally by Disabled People Against Cuts, DPAC., well done them. Here is one attendees account below.

care.data - what is going to happen ?

GP practices nationwide will soon be required to supply patients' personal and confidential medical information, on a regular and continuous basis, to the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).

Under the Health and Social Care Act 2012, GP practices have no choice but to allow the HSCIC to extract this information.

This project, called care.data, is administered by the HSCIC using software and services provided by a private sector company (ATOS).

When will this take place ?

The HSCIC states that care.data extractions will start from GP surgeries in March 2014.

2013 has been another relatively quiet year on the newswire, but it has not passed without event. Protests and strikes against austerity have continued and the death of Maggie Thatcher was marked.

Unfortunately, the year has not seen the resolution of the concerns about the project's sustainability - despite a large and enthusiastic meeting in February - and these will have to be revisited in the new year.

Earlier this year a sperm whale was found dead with 59 different bits of plastic inside its stomach, which amounted to 17kg of waste. It made the news when it was discovered that the majority of the plastic was sheeting used for greenhouses by supermarket suppliers to grow tomatoes. Instead of recycling the waste, the plastic was dumped into the ocean. Amongst the supermarkets using the supplier were UK retailers Tesco and ALDI.

Cops Off Campus protest at Nottingham University

About 40 people, students and non-students, protested outside the Trent Building on Nottingham University's lakeside campus today. They were there in solidarity with the students in London who've been beaten and arrested over the past week by the metropolitan police.

STOP BEDROOM TAX EVICTIONS - PROTEST ON THURSDAY

On Thursday 21 November, the court hearing will decide whether to grant a possession order to Bedroom Tax tenants – paving the way for evicting some of the most vulnerable people in Nottingham

Our campaign has repeatedly asked Nottingham City Council to follow the example of Broxtowe Borough Council and agree not to evict tenants in arrears because of the Bedroom Tax. The city council has refused to do this and have now made a claim for possession against some tenants in Bedroom Tax arrears.

Budget protest at County Hall

On Wednesday 13th November, Notts County Unison held a protest at County Hall against the cuts being proposed at Nottinghamshire County Council.

The council reverted to Labour control in May, but this has made little difference to the austerity programme in the county which continues apace.
